Description

The 'White Trophy' Ornithogalum is a small bulb that is still not widely planted but quite charming. It is a cultivar that produces spike inflorescences and white star-shaped flowers with a yellow centre, marked with green on the reverse, on a small tuft of lanceolate dark green foliage. They open in the sun as early as March in the mildest regions. This hardy perennial can remain in the ground in most regions. However, growing it in a pot allows you to enjoy it earlier.

Ornithogalum oligophyllum is a species of the genus Ornithogalum, which includes about 190 to 217 species and belongs to the family Asparagaceae. It is a synonym of Ornithogalum balansae. It comes from Greece, Turkey, and Georgia.

If you want a bright and joyful spring, plant the 'White Trophy' Ornithogalum in the front of your flower beds or in pots. It appreciates well-drained soils that do not retain excessive moisture and sunny or slightly shaded exposures. Withstanding temperatures below -15°C, it is suitable for most climates. If the conditions are favourable, bulblets may appear at the periphery of the main bulb, increasing the population and multiplying the flowers. These are grouped in corymbs, carried by flexible, slightly loose stems, surrounded by long ribbon-like leaves, which also droop as they unfold. The whole then spreads over about 10 cm wide and reaches a height of about 10 cm, but can grow larger under more favourable climates. The flowers are composed of 6 white tepals with a green central tongue on the reverse side. They open widely and reveal a small yellow heart bordered by stamens. These delicate little stars often bloom in April-May, but growing them in pots accelerates their development.

The 'White Trophy' Ornithogalum will thrive alongside small spring bulbs that you will find in our selection. Alongside Puschkinias, Crocuses, Chionodoxas, and Hyacinths, it will brighten the edges of pathways, sunny rockeries, and even balconies. It is a bulb that deserves its place and brings delicacy at the end of winter.
