Description

The Alpine Squill is a small bulbous perennial that blooms from March to April and can be found at altitudes of up to 1500m (4921ft). This spring plant produces clusters of eight star-shaped flowers of an intense blue colour, although not as numerous as the Italian squill. These flowers measure 2 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in diameter. Its stem is very slender and red or brown in colour, branching upwards.

This Alpine Squill is also known as the Two-leaf Squill because it only has two leaves, very rarely three. When fully mature, it reaches a height of 8 to 15cm (3 to 6in). It is a species native to central and southern Europe, as well as Turkey. It is very hardy.

This perennial brightens up cool undergrowth before the trees have leaves. The plant grows in small colonies in wooded, mountainous, and humid areas.

Planting and care

Place your Bifolia squill in full sun or partial shade in a medium, sandy, humus-bearing and well-drained soil. In a sheltered area, place the pots in full light in a mixture of equal parts of loam, one-quarter leaf compost, and one-quarter gravel. Plant the bulbs between 8 and 10cm (3 and 4in) deep from September to November. During growth, water once or twice a week and keep dry in summer. The Bifolia squill may be susceptible to diseases. It is an easy plant to cultivate.
