The beautiful Blue Wow Tulip is named so because it is almost blue, and because the unique spectacle of its flowering inspires astonishment, wonder, or admiration. Carried by a sturdy stem, the flower bursts open in May, resembling at a small tender green artichoke. Then the green petals spread out over a layer of white-ivory petals more or less tinged with green. A dome emerges from the heart of this corolla, composed of a multitude of small petals of a light violet tending towards blue, intertwined with each other. Magnificent, exotic, and rarely cultivated, this tulip will delight enthusiasts of truly original plants. Very different, but very pretty, 'Blue Wow' also brings something very new to bouquets.
Â
The 'Blue Wow' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 2006 by the INRA, it is currently classified in the 'Late Double' group, although the unique structure of its flower almost deserves a specific horticultural category to be created. This compact tulip reaches 30 to 35 cm (12 to 14in) in height when flowering in May, a little later than other tulips. The large flowers are strangely put together, undoubtedly the result of a very rare mutation. The particularly blueish colour of the flower has never been seen before in tulips and accentuates its unique personality. The flowers last a long time in a vase or the garden and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.
Â
Late double tulips have varied tender or vibrant colours and opulent and naive flowers which bring fantasy and romance to pots or sunny gardens, planted with the most beautiful spring blooms. Blue Wow pairs well with pastel tulips such as 'Angélique', 'Creme Up Star' and 'Maureen Double', or for contrast, dark ones like 'Queen of the Night'. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for bouquets, as they last a long time in a vase. 'Blue Wow' is unique and pairs well with other pastel varieties, such as 'Françoise', 'La Belle Epoque', and 'Greenstar', in a large and "glamorous" bouquet.

Botanical data
It is preferable to plant the Blue Wow tulip in a sunny position, from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also plant it in a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in light, fertile, and well-drained, well-worked soil at a depth of 15 cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10 cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch each other, for a mass effect. Cut the flower stems after flowering but allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
