Description

Double Early Tulip Columbus forms very beautiful, very double, peony-like, round and regular flowers composed of pink-violet petals brushed with white-pink on the edges, carried by relatively short and sturdy stems. The distribution of colours is remarkably artistic. The flowers bloom from March and continue until April, perfect in the first spring bouquets.

The 'Columbus' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 2006, it is currently classified in the group of early doubles, whose main characteristic is to bloom at the same height, appreciated by fans of well-arranged flower beds. They are often offered in a mix of colours under the name of 'Murillo' tulips. Perched on sturdy 35-40 cm (14-16in) stems, emerging from slightly glaucous green, widely lanceolate leaves, the elegantly coloured double flowers are round, quite short and well open. The long-lasting flowering takes place from March to April, at the beginning of the tulip season.

'Columbus' pairs well with the bright and romantic 'Foxtrot' tulip, but also with the small 'daisies' of anthemis, the silver foliage of the cineraria maritima or the feathery foliage of yarrow. Early double tulips are famous for their infinitely varied colours and solid and resistant flowers, useful in flower beds and bouquets. They are among the most planted varieties, unrivalled in bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for beautiful cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care

Plant the Columbus tulip bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-cultivated, and well-drained soil. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The Columbus tulip will grow well in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a good, sunny or semi-shady location. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads so as not to exhaust the plant.
