Description

Tulipa 'Freeman' is a late-flowering tulip with large salmon-yellow double flowers, touched with green on the outside of the corolla and bordered with golden yellow. This recent variety has a long flowering period. The flowers are borne at the top of sturdy stems, which are resistant to bad weather. It is a magnificent addition to the garden.

Tulipa 'Freeman' belongs to the Liliaceae family. It was created in the millenium in the Netherlands. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of 'Double Late Tulips', whose main characteristic is to bear double and crumpled flowers, resembling peonies. 'Freeman' is not very tall (35 to 40cm (14 to 16in)). Its fairly short, double flower is of a good size and is well arranged. Its palette of colours, both soft and warm, includes soft salmon-orange, ochre-yellow, a hint of pink and green, and beautiful yellow edges. The unique shape of the tulip adds an additional charm, making it a real favourite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase. Flowering takes place in April-May, in the second part of the tulip season.

Double late tulips are renowned for their rich colours, elegance, stunning and variegated flowers, and their suitability in flower beds and bouquets. They work well with large perennials such as euphorbias, peonies, and roses. They look beautiful in pots. When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant extra bulbs for bouquets, as they make superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. In the garden, 'Freeman' attracts butterflies. Plant it with white flowers like those of Iberis sempervirens, fragrant alyssums, or forget-me-nots.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs from October to December for spring flowering. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot. Plant the bulbs in light, fertile, and well-drained soil. Plant them 15cm (6in) deep. Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart (without touching each other) to create a mass effect that will give a more decorative appearance. Simply water regularly, especially during dry winters, and trim the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
