Description

The ‘Palmyra’ Early Double Tulip, with its dark velvet double corollas, pays a beautiful tribute to the ancient city of Palmyra. Mysterious yet brilliant, its flower, a deep purple-black with hints of violet, offers wonderful possibilities for combinations with other tulips in its category, as well as with a range of pastel or flamboyant tones. This tulip, borne on a sturdy stem, blooms early in the season, after the early single tulips. And its flowers last a long time, both in the garden and in a vase.

The ‘Palmyra’ Tulip, like all tulips, belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, registered in 2007 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in the group of early double tulips, whose main characteristic is that they all flower at the same height, making them a popular choice for well-regulated flower beds. They are often offered in a mix of colours under the name 'Murillo' tulips. Perched on strong 35-40cm (14-16in) stems, just above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the double flowers, although relatively small in size, open almost flat. They are particularly attractive for their rather unusual colour, ranging from brown to purple and black, enhanced by very glossy petals. Flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

With their rich colours, sturdy and resistant flowers, suitable for both flower beds and bouquets, the reputation of early double tulips is well established. It is no coincidence that they are among the most commonly used varieties for cut flowers. Unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens, do not forget to consider the height and flowering period of tulips when designing your flower beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. 'Palmyra', with its dark colour, contrasts beautifully with the white of 'Cardinal Mindszenty', the pink-red of 'Eternal Flame', the bright yellow of 'Orca', as well as with the blue flowers of grape hyacinths or wood hyacinths.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will thrive in moist to dry soil. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
