As expected, a very beautiful effect while waiting for the peonies.

Description

With a discreet elegance, the 'Purple Pion' Double Early Tulip produces flowers resembling small peonies, with an open cup shape and a very double bloom, with shades ranging from amethyst, purple, and plum. Its diaphanous petals are slightly translucent, further transforming the perception of its colour. The outer petals are often shaded with black, accentuating its very 'Chic' appearance. It blooms after the early single tulips, in April, and its flowering lasts a long time. Perfect for well-arranged flower beds or refined bouquets.

The 'Purple Pion' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of double early tulips, whose main characteristic is to bloom at the same height, making it a popular category among enthusiasts of well-arranged flower beds. They are often offered in a mix of colours under the name 'Murillo' tulips. Perched on sturdy 35 cm (14in) stems, emerging from broadly lanceolate, slightly glaucous green leaves, the double flowers, with a very elegant colour, are fully open. Sometimes, green floral parts that enclose the corolla can be observed. When they open, they reveal outer petals with a dark zone at the base. The flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

The 'Purple Pion' tulip pairs well with the 'Angelic' tulip, so pink and romantic, but also with the small 'marguerites' of anthemis, the silver foliage of cineraria maritima, or the feathery foliage of yarrow. With its rich colours, sturdy and resistant flowers, suitable for both flower beds and bouquets, the popularity of double early tulips is undeniable. They are already among the most planted varieties. Unmatched in bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens, do not forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful cut flowers that last long in a vase.

About botanical species: Tulip species are found from Western Europe to China and Japan, including Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is located in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

In Europe, there are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These include either large adventive tulips from cultivated land, the most well-known being the Agen Tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called "botanical tulips," and one of the most common is the Wild Tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which used to grow under vine plants and whose subspecies australis is known as the Southern Tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Puple Pion' tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid depleting the plant.
