Description

The 'Yellow Pompenette' Late Double Tulip is a recent variety belonging to the series of peony-flowered tulips, notable for their large, fully double corollas that bloom a little later than others. This one offers a beautiful golden-yellow colour softened with pearly highlights. It blooms between late April and early May, on a thick, 35 cm tall stem. This variety has received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

The 'Yellow Pompenette' Tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of "Late Double Tulips," whose main characteristic is to have very double and crumpled flowers, carried by sturdy stems. 'Yellow Pompenette' is of medium size (40 cm) and its flower is of a beautiful size, double, cup-shaped, blooming a little like a florist's ranunculus. It shows excellent durability. Its yellow colour is very uniform. It is a real favourite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase, gradually shedding their petals in a pearly shower. The flowering starts relatively late, at the end of April or beginning of May, when other tulips have already long faded.

Late double tulips, with their varied, soft or intense colours, and their opulent and delicate flowers, add fantasy and romance in pots or in sunny gardens. They harmonise well with the most beautiful spring blooms and other tulips, whether pastel like 'Orange Angelique' and 'Maureen Double', or darker ones like 'Queen of the Night'. When creating your flower beds, take into account the height and flowering time, which vary considerably depending on the cultivars. For cut flower enthusiasts, it is recommended to plant a few extra bulbs, as these tulips hold up well in a vase. Pair 'Yellow Pompenette' with variegated yellow cream foliage like Carex 'Evergold'.

Planting and care

How to plant my tulips? Plant your 'Yellow Pompenette' tulips as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15 cm (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. Tulips prefer contrasting climates, which experience cold winters and hot, dry summers. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarelles, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Euphorbia Cyparissia, in the foreground of your flower beds, their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and during the season and they will elegantly hide their yellowed leaves.
