Description

The 'Astronaut Andre Kuipers' Tulip is a brand new variety, rarely offered for sale, classified in the Triumph tulip category although its corollas open a bit like parrot tulips. Its slightly puffy petals are generously brushed with fresh pink on a soft yellow-orange background. It blooms in the middle of the tulip season, from early to mid-spring, depending on the climate. A unique tulip to personalise and brighten up flower beds. Surround its pastel flowers with fennels, alchemillas or Euphorbias that will enhance its delicacy.

Tulipa 'Astronaut Andre Kuipers' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 2016, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is flowers with a narrow cup shape. It reaches 45 cm (18in) high when in bloom. Perched on stems well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the flowers are elegant, with a very narrow cup shape when in bloom, widening significantly at maturity. Flowering takes place in April, at the heart of the tulip season.

Triumph tulips are famous for their richly colourful, sturdy and resistant flowers, usable in flower beds and as cut flowers. They are among the most planted varieties in gardens worldwide and unmatched in bringing the colour of spring to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for gorgeous cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will grow well in moist and fertile soil, which is relatively dry in summer, in a sunny or partially shady location. After flowering, it is best to remove the seed heads to prevent the plant from becoming exhausted.
