Description

The 'Avocado' Triumph Tulip approaches perfection in the category of yellow-flowered tulips. It stands out for its purity and brightness of colour, as well as for the excellent durability of its flower, both in vases and in flower beds. With its classic cup shape, it is carried by thick and sturdy stems that are resistant to bad weather and allow for the creation of radiant bouquets, either on its own or with white tulips, for example. It blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in April, depending on the climate.

The 'Avocado' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Originally horticultural, introduced in the Netherlands in 2009, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, which is characterized by narrow cup-shaped flowers. Perched on 40cm (16in) tall stems, above the widely lanceolate green-blue leaves, the elegant, simple flowers gradually transition from pale green-yellow to pure yellow. They have a narrow cup shape and display six "petals" (more precisely tepals) with thick and slightly silky substance that reflect light admirably. This variety blooms in May, towards the end of the tulip season.

The 'Avocado' Triumph Tulip finds its place in large flower beds, planted in large groups. Its sunny colour, which can stand on its own in a vase, also allows for beautiful combinations with tulips in white, red, black, orange tones, as well as with blue flowers (Forget-me-nots, Grape Hyacinths, Squills, Hyacinths). This also maximizes the duration of flowering in flower beds. Pair it with white daffodils, lady's mantle, or hellebores and spurges, and you will create stunning scenes. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. In a vase, use very little water, just a little at the bottom is enough! Additionally, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant 'Avocado' tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Avocado' tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. After flowering, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
