Description

The 'Cardinal Colour' Early Single Tulip is a variety introduced in 1845, still highly appreciated and planted in gardens worldwide. Its flower, with remarkable durability, displays a deep red and velvety colour, with rich pink to plum reflections. It blooms early in the season, in March-April, on a very short stem that is weather-resistant. Perfect in bouquets but also in spring borders and pots, it will enliven pastel-coloured flowers and spice up clumps of daffodils and hyacinths.

The 'Cardinal Colour' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is a tulip that can be considered historical, currently classified in Division 1 of tulips, whose main characteristic is early flowering. Of modest size, it will reach a height of 30 cm (12in) when in bloom. Perched on the very strong dark green stems barely emerging from the broadly lanceolate leaves, the bright wide cup-shaped flowers reveal a small yellow heart with black stamens, which emits a light fragrance. Flowering takes place in March or early April depending on the climate, at the same time or just after the flowering of greigii botanical tulips. This variety is easy to force at home for an even earlier flowering.

With their rich colours, sturdy and resistant flowers, suitable for both flower beds and early season bouquets, the fame of early single tulips is well established. They are already among the most planted varieties. Unmatched for adding colour to pots or sunny gardens, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful long-lasting cut flowers.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Cardinal Colour' tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil in the summer. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is best to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
