Description

Tulipa 'Passionale' blooms just after early tulips. It bears a single flower, with a classic shape, in a purple-lilac colour. Simple, elegant, and weather-resistant, it is perfect in flower beds and bouquets. Pair this dark flower with vibrant tones such as orange or yellow.

Tulipa 'Passionale' belongs to the Liliaceae family. It was introduced in 1983 in the Netherlands. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, characterised by narrow cup-shaped flowers. The elegant flowers perch at the top of 45cm (18in) tall stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves. The flowers are 4 to 6cm (2in) in diameter. They are lilac-purple and shiny. They are quite square but with a narrow cup shape, showing six "petals" (more precisely tepals) with a pinker interior. The anthers at the heart of the flower are light yellow. The flowers are carried by very sturdy stems, unaffected by bad weather. Flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

'Passionale' works well in large flower beds. Its pure dark colour makes beautiful combinations with white, yellow or orange tulips. It also maximises the flowering period. Pair it with 'Blushing Lady' daffodils or 'Sparkling' narcissus, hyacinths, Corsican hellebores and euphorbias for stunning scenes. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots, and containers. This tulip beautifully enhances balconies and patios. It pairs perfectly with large perennials. It is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs from September to December for a beautiful spring flowering. Choose a sunny or a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs in well-drained and deeply loosened soil, at a depth of 15cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart (making sure they do not touch each other) to achieve a mass effect. Simply water regularly, especially during dry winters, and cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
