Description

The 'Silk Road' Early Double Tulip is as refined as the finest silks of the Orient. Its double flower, with a satin finish, offers a spotted or variegated pattern of red rose on a background ranging from cream yellow to ivory, which varies from one plant to another. Carried by a rather long stem, it is a fabulous cut flower. Its flowering follows that of early single tulips.

The Silk Road Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, created in France by INRA, this variety was registered in 2013 by Maveridge International B.V. It is currently classified in the group of early double tulips. They are often fragrant and offered in a mix of colours under the name 'Murillo' tulips. Perched on strong 50 cm stems, above the widely lanceolate leaves, the double flowers of 'Silk Road' are 8 cm long and open almost flat. Each flower is different, but all combine different patterns of purplish pink on a background ranging from cream yellow to ivory. Flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season. The foliage dries out some time after flowering, while the bulb goes into dormancy.

Usable both in flower beds and as cut flowers, early double tulips with peony-like flowers are among the most commonly used varieties for cutting. Ideal for composing flower pots or adding a touch of charm to sunny gardens, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period of tulips when designing your flower beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few extra bulbs as they make beautiful long-lasting cut flowers. This 'Silk Road' variety will be enhanced by forget-me-nots and the 'Double Price' Early Double Tulip with its silver mauve pink flowers.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Silk Road' tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm, spacing them 10 cm apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add uncomposted manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Place it in a good, sunny or semi-shaded position. Once flowering is complete, remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the bulb.
