Description

Tulipa 'Sky High Scarlet' is a giant variety that carries a beautiful classic-shaped flower in a vibrant scarlet-red. It is sublime in bouquets, and majestic in large beds. It blooms at the end of the tulip season, in May. Often underestimated, late single tulips perfectly complement perennials with their pure colours and are perfect for bouquets.

Tulipa 'Sky High Scarlet' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was obtained in the Netherlands and introduced in 2006 by INRA as a Triumph tulip. It is now classified in Division 5, the late single tulips, whose main characteristic is to bloom late in the season. It will reach a height of no less than 80 to 90cm (32 to 35in) when in bloom, an exceptional size for the genus. Its large flowers appear at the top of these solid stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves. The elegant flowers are elongated. They boast a pure hue, and are slightly fragrant. Flowering takes place in May-June, alongside early summer blooms.

Like all its sisters, Tulipa 'Sky High Scarlet' is unmatched in adding a quaint charm to the garden. It looks wonderful in spring bouquets. It works well in large beds, alongside perennials such as peonies or pastel-toned wallflowers. Late tulips extend the flowering period. This tulip is ideal for creating elegant bouquets, along with peonies, lilacs, or bellflowers. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Tulip enthusiasts may be familiar with the famous giant tulips of Carqueiranne, growing in the Var lands. They benefit from a particular climate and soil, accompanied by abundant watering. The late single tulips acquire their gigantism from planting in the open field.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
