Description

Tulipa 'Synaeda Amor' is a feast for the eyes, in a vase or in the garden. This majestic tulip bears a narrow corolla with pale-pink petals tinged with lilac-pink. They are thick and waxy. The flowers are carried by thick and sturdy stems. It shows resistance to bad weather. It blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in the heart of spring, depending on the climate.

Tulipa 'Synaeda Amor' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to have flowers with a narrow cup shape. The flowers sit at the top of 45cm (18in) tall stems, high above the widely lanceolate leaves. The elegant flowers are a translucent pale-pink, marked in the centre with a mauve zone. They are quite square but with a narrow cup shape. They display six "petals" (more precisely tepals) with a pinker interior. The flowers are carried by sturdy stems, which are unaffected by bad weather conditions. Flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

Tulipa 'Synaeda Amor' works well in large beds. Its fresh colours complement white or red tulips, creating a beautiful contrast. Planting with other types of tulips will extend the flowering season. Combine it with daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, Corsican hellebores, and euphorbias for dazzling surprising scenes. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots, and containers. This tulip beautifully enhances balconies and patios. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials. The cut flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

About botanical species

Tulip species are found throughout most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, including Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These include large adventive tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), as well as small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called "botanical tulips", and one of the most common is the wild tulip (T. sylvestris), which used to often grow sheltered by vines and whose subspecies, australis, is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
