Description

The 'Yokohama' Early Single Tulip bears an elongated cup-shaped, medium-sized and exceptionally long-lasting flower in a vibrant yellow, perfect for brightening up the spring garden in mass plantings. It is shiny and pleasantly scented and blooms early in the tulip season, in March-April. Whether in a vase or a border, it pairs well with forget-me-nots and Siberian squills, in a yellow and blue composition full of contrast and fresh colours.

The 'Yokohama' Tulip was introduced to the horticultural market in 1973 and belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 1 of tulips, whose main characteristic is to bloom very early, without minding frost. It will reach about 35 cm (14in) high when in flower. The elegant, bright and pure yellow, cup-shaped flowers, with thick and pointed petals, are perched on sturdy stems well above the greyish-green broadly lance-shaped leaves. It will flower in March-April, at the beginning of the tulip season and is a very long-lasting variety that returns year after year.

Early single tulips are easy-to-grow, robust and reliable plants with a wide range of colours and solid and resistant flowers, suitable for borders and bouquets. They are among the most planted varieties, unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your borders, as these can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for beautiful long-lasting cut flowers.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, 15 cm (6in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Yokohama' tulip will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid depleting the plant.
