Description

Tulipa Red Hunter Botanical Tulip has bright red flowers on a narrow, grey-green foliage. The 3 cm (1in) flowers have pointed petals and form stars that open in the sun and close in the evening.

Tulipa batalinii and its cultivars are extremely hardy, enjoy a sunny exposure and can quickly colonise a patch of lawn without root competition. Their small size is very suitable for rock gardens or containers.

Eduard August von Regel is credited with naming the batalinii species, which he chose in 1889 in honor of Dr. Bataline, director of the Botanical Garden of St. Petersburg until the end of the 19th century.

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, this delicate tulip with pale yellow flowers was crossed with Tulipa maximowiczii, a flamboyant species with a red heart. A series of more than promising hybrids were thus obtained, including Tulipa batalinii Red Hunter.

It is classified among the botanical tulips. Botanical tulips refer to all species of tulips, as well as their hybrids, that live in the wild or cultivation and have no relation to Tulipa gesneriana, the garden tulip, a species that has never been found in the wild. Botanical tulips have the advantage of being able to thrive from one year to the next, to flower again and even multiply.

Planting and care

Plant your tulips as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 10 cm (4in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height in soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them.
