Description

The Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Banja Luka' is a variety of beautiful stature that bears large brilliantly bicoloured cup-shaped flowers, in golden yellow flamed with cherry red. When in bloom, between late April and May, it is the star of the flower beds. Its long sturdy stems are weather resistant. Sculptural and flamboyant, it is also an exceptional flower for bouquets.

The Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Banja Luka' belongs to the lily family. Originally horticultural, registered in 1998 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in Division 4. The main characteristics of Darwin Hybrid Tulips are large single flowers with an oval shape, appearing in the middle of the season, borne by long stems resistant to inclement weather. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. 'Banja Luka' is a tall variety; it will reach 55 to 60 cm (22 to 24in) in height when in bloom, and its fully open corollas measure 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6in) in diameter. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large cups are initially elongated and elegant before opening widely. The flower colour is a blend of gold and ruby, each with its own personality. A colour enhanced by the thick texture of the petals. The flowering takes place in the middle of the tulip season, and each flower lives for several days before wilting.

The 'Banja Luka' Tulip finds its place in large flower beds, and of course, in bouquets. Combine it with daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, or even lady's mantle, Corsican hellebores, and spurges, and you will create stunning scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in pots and containers. This tulip adds dynamism to balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials such as peonies and lupins. When arranging it in a vase, use very little water, just an inch at the bottom is enough! Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Tulip bulbs are planted from October to mid-December for spring flowering. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded area, in a sheltered spot. Tulips prefer rich, well-drained soil and can tolerate dry soil in the summer. If your soil is very clayey, incorporate some sand into the soil before planting or add some gravel at the bottom of the planting hole.

Work the soil deeply and remove any unwanted weeds or rocks. Dig a hole using a bulb planter and bury the bulbs, with the pointed end facing upwards, at a depth of two to three times their height. Space the bulbs about 10 cm (4in) apart. Bulbs can be planted individually or in groups of 5 to 10 for a beautiful effect. You can place them one by one on the ground or "scatter" them on the ground for a more natural effect in flower beds. Water lightly after planting.

For container planting, provide drainage at the bottom of the pot (clay balls or gravel) and then plant the bulbs in a mixture of potting soil, topsoil, and a little bit of sand. Add a small amount of compost when flowering.

Tulips require little maintenance. Water if necessary in spring. Remove faded flowers to avoid exhausting the bulb. After flowering, allow the foliage to die naturally and only cut it when it turns yellow, to promote the accumulation of new reserves in the bulb.

Unlike botanical tulips, large-flowered tulips will degenerate after 2 to 3 years if left in the ground. You can choose to leave them in place and renew them regularly. If you want to prolong the flowering, dig up the bulbs when the foliage is dry. Remove the soil around the bulbs and then store them in a cool, dry, and dark place. Plant them again in the following autumn.
