Description

'Hakuun' Darwin Tulip hybrid, sometimes also known as 'White Cloud', is an exceptional new Japanese variety. It has large, thick flowers which emerge and bloom in a perfectly pure, sparkling snowy white. Belonging to a new line of Darwin hybrids that flower earlier in April-May with more durable flowers, Hakuun is a reliable and vigorous variety, with strong, weather-resistant stems. It is sculptural, so stands out in borders and makes a sensational cut flower.

'Hakuun' Darwin hybrid tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, characterized by large single flowers with an oval shape, appearing in mid-season, borne on long weather-resistant stems. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. 'Hakuun' will reach a height of 45 to 55 cm (18 to 22in) when in bloom. The large flowers are elongated, elegant, pure white, and iridescent, perched on strong stems well above the broadly lanceolate leaves. Their color is enhanced by the slightly waxy and translucent texture of the petals. The corolla opens to reveal a small pale yellow centre with stamens of the same colour. It will flower in April-May and each flower lasts several days before fading. This variety is easy to grow and reliably blooms every spring.

The sparkling white of its corollas invites contemplation and brings a sense of serenity to the garden, regardless of its style. Its elegance allows for associations with tulips in a wide range of colours, as a touch of white softens bright hues and enlivens darker shades. Combine it with daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, Corsican hellebores and euphorbias, and you will create stunning compositions. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots and containers. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. When in a vase, very little water at the bottom is enough! Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, 15 cm (6in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Hakuun' tulip will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
