Description

The Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Blushing Apeldoorn' is a worthy descendant of 'Apeldoorn', appreciated for its vigour and ability to perennialise in the garden. The large egg-shaped flowers of 'Blushing Apeldoorn', very long-lasting, display a changing colour in a palette of warm tones combining yellow, orange, and red. Reliable and vigorous, this variety naturalises very well in the garden and blooms again each year on long, weather-resistant stems. It blooms brilliantly in the April sun. Superb in a monochrome bed, it is also an exceptional flower for bouquets.

The Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Blushing Apeldoorn' belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, obtained in 1989 in the Netherlands, this cultivar, descended from the exceptional 'Apeldoorn', withstands the test of time without ever boring amateurs and professionals. It is currently classified in Division 4. The main characteristics of Darwin Hybrid Tulips are large single flowers of oval shape, appearing in mid-season, carried on long, weather-resistant stems. Tulips in this group are the most grown for the cut flower trade. 'Blushing Apeldoorn' is huge; it reaches 55 to 65 cm (22 to 26in) in height when in bloom, and its fully opened corollas will measure 15 cm (6in) in diameter. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large flowers are initially elongated and elegant, then open up a bit like cups. The colour of the petals is a golden yellow edged and veined with red, gradually turning orange as random red streaks appear. A colour enhanced by the thick and silky texture of the petals. Flowering takes place in April-May, and each flower lives several days before fading. This variety naturalises easily in the garden, in fertile and well-drained soil.

The 'Blushing Apeldoorn' Tulip, sculptural and radiant, finds its place at the back of monochrome large beds or with white, orange, or red varieties, and of course in bouquets. Combine it with daffodils, jonquils, with hyacinths or even with lady's mantleCorsican hellebores and euphorbias, and you will create surprising scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in pots and containers. This tulip brightens up balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials such as peonies and lupins. In a vase, use very little water! Moreover, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Blushing Apeldoorn' tulip bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add uncomposted manure or fresh compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded position for part of the day in our very sunny regions. Once flowering is finished, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
