Description

Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Jaap Groot' is a doubly delightful variety originating from a mutation of the famous tulip 'Golden Apeldoorn'. Its large flowers are creamy white to ivory, streaked with a very bright yellow and shaded with orange at the base. Over time, the yellow fades to white. Its magnificent corollas are borne on sturdy stems, above very ornamental foliage which is green-blue margined with white. Belonging to a new line of early blooming Darwin hybrids with more durable flowers, 'Jaap Groot' is a reliable and long-lasting variety. It blooms in the heart of spring, bringing freshness and exoticism to beds or bouquets.

Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Jaap Groot' belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, characterized by large single flowers with an oval shape, appearing in mid-season on long weather-resistant stems. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. 'Jaap Groot' is ornamental in two ways: its flowering is radiant and its foliage is delicately edged in white. This variety will reach 45 to 55 cm (18 to 22in) high when in bloom. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large flowers are elongated, elegant and bicoloured cream and golden yellow. The white corolla opens widely, revealing a bright yellow heart around a small black spotted centre, resembling a fried egg. It will flower in April-May, and each flower lives several days before fading.

Planted en masse, it produces a fantastic bicolour effect. You can also combine it with daffodils or alchemillas, Corsican hellebores and euphorbias, for surprising compositions. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots and containers. This tulip will be beautiful on balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials, and it is ideal for elegant cut flowers. In a vase, very little water at the bottom is enough! Additionally, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, 15 cm (6in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. 'Jaap Groot' will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or semi-shaded location. After flowering, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant. Wait until the foliage has completely yellowed and dried before cutting it.
