Description

The 'Cacharel' fringed tulip has a late and classy flowering. It waits until May to bloom with fresh pink petals, shaded with flesh pink and touched with lime green at the base, a paler pink and delicately fringed at the edges. They are carried by sturdy and solid stems that withstand the wind. The softness of its colors and its hairy buds work wonders in romantic borders and create irresistibly tender bouquets!

'Cacharel' fringed tlip belongs to the lily family. Originally horticultural, it is currently classified in the 'fringed' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely toothed petals. This tulip will reach a height of 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18in) when in bloom in May, slightly towards the end of the tulip season. The flowers are single, in a mixture of different pinks, with a rather round cup-shaped bloom that opens to a white throat at maturity. The fringed edges of this tulip are pale pink and look like small crystals. The flowers last a long time in the garden and a vase, and allow the tulip season to extend until May. The foliage is wide, with a soft, greyish green colour.

In the world of flowers, there is truly nothing to compare to fringed tulips to spice up your garden in spring with something unique. Cacharel is Ideal for borders and to create beautiful spots in perennial beds, with biennial or annual plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose forget-me-nots, sweet williams, or annual poppies for this. By choosing fringed tulips, you will bring an original and refined touch to your bouquets. You can also combine them with Darwin tulips, parrot tulips, late double tulips, and lily-flowered varieties.

About botanical species: Wild tulip species are found from Western Europe to China and Japan, passing through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. They are also distributed in North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity of the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Various wild species grow, most of which are endangered in their natural environment. They are either large tulips originally from crops, such as the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, these are called "botanical tulips".

Planting and care

Plant your Cacharel Dentate Tulips as soon as possible in well-drained, deeply-loosened soil, 15 cm (6in) deep (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). and a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny location for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks but allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarelles, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts or Cypress Spurge at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly conceal the yellowed leaves. Red is still uncommon in the garden, so take advantage of the wide range of tulips in this colour. Red tulips will be elegantly enhanced by dark green foliage, such as a yew or box hedge or Obsidian Heuchera.
