Description

The Frilled Tulip 'Flamenco' is not a discreet flower, it proudly displays its fringed canary yellow dress with flaming red in flower beds and bouquets. Dazzling, it will be enhanced by decorative foliage and the small white and blue flowers of forget-me-nots. It blooms in April-May, in the heart of the tulip season.

The Fringed Tulip 'Flamenco' belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is the finely fringed petals. This tulip will reach a height of 45cm (18in) when in bloom. The flowering takes place in April-May, a little later than the other tulips. The flowers are single, slightly open cups, beautifully bicoloured in yellow and red. The flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

In the world of flowers, there is truly nothing comparable to fringed tulips to spice up your garden in spring with something unique. Ideal for borders, the 'Flamenco' Tulip will also create beautiful patches in perennial beds, accompanied by biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose wallflowers or columbines for this purpose. Lady's mantle is also a beautiful companion for tulips in warm colours. By choosing fringed tulips, you will add a unique touch to your bouquets. Only put very little water in their vase, a bottom is enough. Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting will be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well worked and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Fabio' tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded position. After flowering, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them. We recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, and Euphorbias at the front of your flowerbeds, as their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and, during the season, they will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves. Red and orange are less common in the garden, so let's take advantage of the wide range of tulips available in these colours. For an elegant effect, these tulips will be enhanced by dark green foliage, such as a hedge of Yews or Boxwoods. Also consider dark foliage plants like 'Obsidian' Heuchera.
