Description

The 'Oviedo' Tulip is a recent variety, with a strong flowering from April to May, also endowed with excellent durability. Its beautiful narrow flower with fringed petals sports a refined and unusual colour: a very pale pink, which can be described as nymph's thigh, widely brushed with bright purple. Beautiful when planted in mass, it will beautifully accompany the 'Santander' variety, brushed with candy pink.

The 'Oviedo' Dentate Tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 2008, it owes its name to the superb eponymous city located in the north of Spain. It is classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely dentate petals. This tulip of good size, with a sturdy stem in the face of bad weather, will reach 50cm in height when in bloom. The flowering takes place in April-May, a little later than that of other tulips. The flowers are simple, with a slightly open cup, in a delightful blend of almost white pink, purple-pink, and mauve. The fringed edges of this elegant tulip are paler, giving the illusion that the flower is sprinkled with sugar or covered in frost. The thick-textured flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

In the world of flowers, there are few plants to rival dentate tulips, both original and elegant, but also resistant to heat and bad weather. Ideal in borders with white varieties ('Snow Crystal'), bright pink ('Mascotte'), or even purple ('Queen of Night'), the 'Oviedo' Tulip will form a superb combination with the 'Santander' tulip, which has the same qualities, in a pink register. It will create charming compositions with perennials and biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose peonies, oriental poppies, wallflowers, forget-me-nots, or dame's rocket for this purpose. Very dark Heucheras, like the 'Blackout' or 'Obsidian' cultivars, enhance all pastel colours, as do blue perennial geraniums ('Rozanne', 'Johnson's Blue', 'Orion'). By choosing dentate tulips, you will also bring a unique touch to your bouquets.

Planting and care

How to plant my 'Oviedo' tulips? Plant your tulips as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15cm (6in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny location for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.
