Pretty but slightly coarse flowers, medium-sized stems, good pruning. Good recovery.

Description

'Snow Crystal' Double Dentate Tulip bears a flower that resembles a snowflake magnified under a microscope, or a large white carnation. The flowers are double and round, crowned with delicately carved fringes. They are a sparkling white, enclosed in a row of outer petals tinged with tender green. It flowers quite late, in May, on short and sturdy stems. The cut flowers are perfect for creating delicate and unique bouquets.

'Snow Crystal' belongs to the Liliaceae family. It was obtained in 2008. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely dentate petal tips. This tulip will reach a height of 35 to 40cm (14 to 16in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place in May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are double, with a round and full cup shape, and measure up to 6cm (2in) in width. The intensely fringed edges of this tulip are also pure white. The flowers last a long time in the garden as well as in a vase, extending the tulip season until May.

Dentate tulips are increasingly appreciated for their sturdy stems, which provide good resistance even in hot weather. 'Snow Crystal' fits perfectly in large flower beds. Combine it with other tulips to maximise the duration of flowering in the beds. It can also be used in a border, in rock gardens, and flower beds, or in pots and containers. This tulip beautifully enhances balconies and patios. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials, as well as pansies or primroses. We recommend planting heucheras, tiarellas, brunneras, heart of Mary, and cypress spurge at the forefront of your flower beds, as their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.

Planting and care

Ideally, plant in a sunny spot from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also place it in a partially shaded location. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in light, fertile, and well-drained soil that has been deeply loosened. Plant the bulbs to a depth of 15cm (6in) (the bulbs should be covered with soil to a depth twice their height). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch each other, to create a mass effect. Cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.
