Description

Tulipa Santander fringed Tulip is a recently bred, excellent variety for bouquets, due to its excellent vase life, which is equally remarkable in the ground for its robustness and hardiness. In April-May, the plant unfolds an elegant flower with a narrow fringed cup in a tender and fresh candy pink enriched with multiple shades. It is an enchanting variety to grow, within reach of all gardeners.

The 'Santander' fringed Tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 2006, it is classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely fringed petal edges. This sturdy tulip has a short and strong stem 40 cm (16in) high when in bloom. It will flower in April-May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are single, with a slightly open cup, in a delightful gradient of tender pink. The fringed edges of this elegant tulip are very pale pink, giving the illusion that the flower is sprinkled with sugar, or covered in frost. The flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

In the world of flowers, few plants can rival fringed tulips, they are original and elegant, but also resistant to heat and bad weather. Ideal in borders with white varieties ('Snow Crystal'), bright pink ('Mascotte') or even violet ('Queen of the Night'), the 'Santander' Tulip will also create beautiful features in perennial beds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose wallflowers, forget-me-nots or dame's rocket for this purpose. Very dark heucheras, like the 'Blackout' or 'Obsidian' cultivars, enhance all pastel colours, as do blue perennial geraniums (Rozanne, Johnson Blue, Orion). By choosing fringed tulips, you will also add a unique touch to your bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant Santander dentate tulip in a sunny location from September to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also plant it in a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in light, fertile, and well-drained soil, loosened to a depth of 15 cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10 cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch each other to create a mass effect that will give a more decorative appearance. Cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
