Description

Holland Chic lily-flowered tulip is a gentle and elegant variety. This very tall tulip has pointed petals flamed with pink on a white background and pairs beautifully with shades of pink and white. The flowers stand atop 50 cm (20in) tall stems above the widely lanceolate green deciduous leaves. It blooms from late April.

Holland Chic lily-flowered tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in division 6 of horticultural tulips, which are characterized by simple flowers that bloom in the second half of spring with narrow cup-shaped flowers with pointed and curled tepals that open into a star shape. During the day, these flowers become spider-like and fully open. The foliage is thinner than that of other tulips. Each solitary flower is supported by a delicate-looking but weather-resistant stem. They were created in the early 20th century.

Tulips are unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flowerbeds, as these can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for stunning cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Tulip species are found in most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, including Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These include large tulips normally found in cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), as well as small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, these are called "botanical tulips," with one of the most common being the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which often used to grow sheltered by vines and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips grow well in moist to dry soil, in a sunny or semi-shaded location. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly and we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarelles, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts or Spurge, in the foreground of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly conceal their yellowing leaves.
