Description

The 'Yellow Spider' Lily-flowered Tulip is a variety whose exotic shape stands out in the garden. Its unique and spectacular double flower is a bright yellow. Its beautiful performance in the garden makes it ideal for mass planting or paired with other late tulips in strong colours, orange or white. The flowers stand atop 35 cm tall stems above the wide lanceolate green deciduous leaves. It blooms in April.

The 'Yellow Spider' Lily-flowered Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 6 of horticultural tulips, the group of tulips with lily-like flowers, whose main characteristics are flowers that resemble a lily with narrow petals that taper to a point at the top. As they mature, the flowers open wide. They bloom in the second half of spring. During the day, these flowers become spider-like and widely open. The foliage is thinner than that of other tulips. Each solitary flower is supported by a delicate-looking stem, still resistant to bad weather. They were created in the early 20th century.

'Yellow Spider' can be accompanied by other tulips in bold shades, perhaps keeping to solid choices to avoid overwhelming the scene. Add foliage plants for the same purpose, such as low grasses or lady's mantle. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in pots and containers. This tulip enhances balconies and terraces. Unmatched for bringing spring colour to pots or sunny gardens, don't forget to consider height and flowering period when designing your beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as tulips make superb long-lasting cut flowers.

Planting and care

Plant the Yellow Spider Tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm, spacing them 10 cm apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The lily-flowered tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil. Place it in a good, sunny or semi-shaded location. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly and faded, so we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts or Cypress Spurge, at the forefront of your flower beds, as their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and they will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.
