Description

The 'Purple Elegance' Multi-Flowered Tulip is a variety that impresses with the sturdiness of its stems and its long flowering period. Its bulb produces a floral stem that bears 3 to 7 small flowers in bicolour cups, with a classic shape whose aubergine violet petals are edged with pale mauve pink to white. The overall effect is a truly elegant bouquet, with a natural appearance, very different from the somewhat stiff habit that some tulips can have. It blooms rather early in the tulip season. Perfect for enlivening borders, flower beds, and containers, it is an exceptional cut flower.

The 'Purple Elegance' Multi-Flowered Tulip, introduced in 2019, belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, multi-flowered tulips develop a ramified floral stem that gives rise to several smaller flowers, which open progressively, extending the blooming period. The floral stem rises to 35cm (14in) above the broadly lanceolate bluish-green leaves. The petals of this tulip are thick-textured. Initially in the form of a narrow cup, they open into wide corollas. Flowering takes place in April, at the beginning of the tulip season.

The 'Purple Elegance' Multi-Flowered Tulip finds its place in all sunny flower beds and borders. Its colour allows for beautiful combinations with green, pink, blue, wine, or mauve varieties. Pair it with hyacinths or Corsican hellebores, Alchemillas, and Euphorbias for stunning scenes. It can also be planted with pansies in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in pots and containers. This tulip beautifully enhances balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials like peonies, and it is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. In a vase, use very little water, just a bottom is enough! Additionally, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant them in a sunny or semi-shaded location. After flowering, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
