Description

Tulipa 'Graceland' is an old variety, but still in demand thanks to its vigour and robust flowering. It is distinguished by its superb white colour bordered with bright pink, the size of its flowers, and its long sturdy stem. This variety blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in April, or even early May, depending on the climate.

Tulipa 'Graceland' belongs to the Liliaceae family. It was introduced in 2009. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to have narrow cup-shaped flowers. Its flowers appear at the top of thick 50cm (20in) tall stems, well above the broadly lanceolate green-blue leaves. Its classic-shaped corollas are ovoid, measuring 10cm (4in) in diameter. They bear six "petals" (more precisely tepals) with a thick and slightly silky substance. They are creamy-white in colour with a brushed border of bright pink. The foliage yellows and then dries some time after flowering, while the bulb goes into dormancy.

Tulipa 'Graceland' is ideal in large flower beds or large borders. Its white and pink colour makes beautiful combinations with tulips in white, pink, mauve, and purple tones. Its flowering will be enhanced by light flowers, such as forget-me-nots, grape hyacinths, squills, and hyacinths. Pair it with white daffodils, lady's mantle, or even hellebores and euphorbias for stunning scenes. It perfectly accompanies tall perennials. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
