Description

Tulipa 'Match' is an elegant and bright variety of Triumph tulip. Its classic-shaped corolla is a bright red-pink shade on a pale-yellow base. The colours are visible from far away in the garden. Its strong personality will be enhanced by sculptural foliage or light flowering in neutral, white, or blue tones. In flower beds as well as in bouquets, 'Match' is a resplendent flower that invigorates any decor.

Tulipa 'Match' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was registered in the Netherlands in 2015. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to present elegant flowers in a narrow cup shape. It will reach a height of about 50 to 55cm (20 to 22in) when in bloom, while showing good resistance to rain and wind. The single flowers perch on the stems, well above the widely lanceolate green-blue leaves. The flowers are tapered at blooming, and open a little more as they blossom. The petals are cream-yellow at the base and bright red in the upper two-thirds. Flowering takes place in April-May, in the heart of the tulip season.

Tulipa 'Match' is ideal in large, well-drained flower beds, alongside plants with decorative foliage (grasses, fennel, ferns, lady's mantle), muscari and hyacinths, white-flowering tulips ('Calgary'), orange-flowering tulips ('Véronique Sanson'), or mauve-flowering tulips ('Synaeda Amor'). It also works well with narcissus like 'Thalia' or 'Mount Hood'. Plants with decorative foliage will hide the empty space left by the tulip's dry leaves in summer. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots, and containers. It looks wonderful on balconies and patios. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day. By combining tulips, you can create beautifully harmonious compositions.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will thrive in moist to dry soil. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
