Description

Tulipa 'Whispering Dream', officially classified in the category of Triumph, has a flowering similar to that of lily-flowered tulips. Its slender and gracefully recurved petals form a very large elongated cup that opens into a white, cream, and bright pink star with a hint of yellow. It looks incredible in a vase, flower bed, or flower pot at all stages of its flowering. It stands tall in spring on a very long stem that resists bad weather quite well. Plant it in large groups for a fantastic effect.

Tulipa 'Whispering Dream' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was introduced in 2014 in the Netherlands by INRA Innovations. Its flowers perch on stems that can exceed 70cm (28in), well above the widely lanceolate leaves. The large flowers are extremely elegant, both in shape and colour. The corolla of six "petals" (more precisely tepals) can measure up to 14cm (6in) in diameter. Initially a nearly solid bright pink, it gradually fades to pearly white-cream at the base. The interior of the flower is clearly visible when fully bloomed. Each petal is yellow at the base. It appears painted with large strokes of bright fuchsia-pink and cherry-red on a white background. Flowering takes place at the end of April or beginning of May, in the heart of the tulip season.

'Whispering Dream' deserves a prominent place in large flower beds. For example, combine it with solid or flamed tulips in white or red tones for a beautiful contrast. It also maximises the flowering duration of flower beds. Pair it with daffodils, jonquils, or even forget-me-nots and euphorbias for stunning scenes. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, pots, and planters. This tulip enhances balconies and patios very well. It goes perfectly with tall perennials. It is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a small amount of water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
