Adorable little flower that has managed not only to survive but also blooms beautifully in our tightly packed land turned into a real marsh... a recurring problem in the region. Incredible resilience.

They are excellent in borders and perfect for creating stunning displays in rockeries and planters.

Description

This mix of Botanical Tulips greigii brings together early varieties, sometimes flowering as early as March, bearing large flowers on short stems in vibrant, solid or bicolour colours, on broad foliage marbled with purple. These tulips are impressive but easy to grow and naturalise, they open fully in the sun and close each evening, or when the sun disappears. They are excellent for borders and perfect for creating dazzling displays in rockeries and containers. They are robust and reliable, resistant to summer drought and low maintenance, and they return each year.

Botanical Tulip greigii belongs to the lily family. The species Tulipa greigii was the first to be cultivated from wild bulbs, after being brought from Uzbekistan to Germany in 1871. It is native to Central Asia and northeastern Iran and has given rise to numerous cultivars, some of which are included in this selection. These small tulips will not exceed 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14in) high when in bloom, with the stem lengthening over time. The foliage is bluish-green, somewhat grey, fairly wide, wavy and marked with purple spots on most plants. The flowers appear in March-April, earlier or later depending on the variety and climate. The colour of the flowers varies from red to orange, to yellow, in pure or mixed shades. Some of them are red striped with white. The corollas open wide under the sun and close when it disappears.

Botanical tulips do not degenerate over time like large-flowered tulips. They naturalise and can remain in place for several years without special maintenance, thriving in borders and rockeries. To create colourful scenes, they can be combined with various small bulbs: Crocuses, Allium moly, Narcissus with small flowers, Puschkinia... These tulips are unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 10 cm (4in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will grow well in moist to dry soil. Plant them in a sunny or semi-shaded location.

After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly. We recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Cyparissia Spurge, at the front of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.
