Viridiflora Tulips

These amazing viridiflora tulips are little known and little used in our gardens.

They belong to the lily family and are currently classified in Division 8. This latter constitutes the least significant group of tulips and it is closely related to that of late single tulips. Their main characteristics are their late bloom in the season, in May-June, and to have flowers invariably striated or flamed with green. Their stems are of variable height, but sturdy, and the flowers remain beautiful for three weeks, making them exceptional cut flowers.

They are faithful and will repeat flower for several years, offering their rather elongated, flexible, sometimes ruffled cups in fantastic colours, soothed by a omnipresent green touch. They can be found in a wide range of shades, full of sparkling freshness like 'Groenland', an unimaginable pink and green, 'Spring Green', a large white and apple green tulip, highly prized in English gardens, delightful amidst hostas and ferns. 'China Town', is another, shorter variety, it lends itself well to pot growing, it stands out with its beautiful white-edged foliage and its deep pink flowers that turn opalescent when fully open. 'Golden Artist' displays a riot of colours: yellow, orange, cream and of course green, which lines its petals like little torches.

Their bulbs are easy to grow. They are planted in autumn, fairly deeply, in ordinary, medium, well-worked and well-drained soil. Tulips like a sunny or semi-shady exposure.
