Description

The Viridiflora 'Green Mile' Tulip is an unusual variety that will delight gardeners who appreciate flowers with exotic charm. Its stylised lily flower, with lemon yellow, is streaked with green and discreetly fringed along the edges. It combines the characteristics of Viridiflora tuips, lilies, and fringed flowers, making it ideal for enhancing blue and purple tones in the garden. Planted in large numbers or in big bouquets, this tulip creates a superb mass effect towards the end of the tulip season. It tends to perennialise well in the garden.

The Viridiflora 'Green Mile' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Originally horticultural and introduced in 2014, it is currently classified in Division 8, which is currently the least significant group closely related to late single tulips. The main characteristics of Viridiflora tulips are late flowering of blooms striped or streaked with green. The 'Green Mile' variety will reach approximately 40 cm (16in) in height when in bloom. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the narrow cup-shaped flowers, 6 cm (2in) wide, somewhat resemble those of Lily-flowered Tulips in shape. But their six "petals" (more precisely tepals) are more irregular and distinctly marked with green in the centre. The petal edges, yellow in colour, have some very fine fringes. At maturity, the flower opens into a star, revealing a yellow and green throat. Flowering takes place in late May or June, depending on the climate. Another advantage of the Viridiflora Tulip is that its flowers remain beautiful for at least three weeks. It is an excellent cut flower.

The Viridiflora 'Green Mile' Tulip enhances all neighboring plants, especially those with blue, purple, orange, and pink tones. It can be associated with both biennials and perennials or planted in small groups in rock gardens. You can plant daisies, chamomiles, forget-me-nots, lady's mantles, catmints, and other plants alongside it. It is a charming addition to your flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Green Mile' tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is best to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
