Description

Dahlia 'Karma Choc' stands out with its large flowers in a rich, dark and velvety colour. The colour is somewhere between purple and chocolate, and is almost black at the centre. They are carried by stems of the same shade, and are ideal for bouquets. The sturdy stems are perfect in adverse weather conditions. The Karma series of dahlias was originally developed for cut flowers. It boasts medium-sized, brightly coloured varieties that are perfect in beds and pots. Its flowers can last at least 7 days in a vase.

Dahlias belong to the Asteraceae family and are originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. There are currently thousands of horticultural varieties that have conquered gardens worldwide. They are tender perennials with fleshy tubers.

Dahlias are classified according to the shape of their heads. 'Karma Choc' is a decorative dahlia with waterlily-like flowers. The inflorescences are composed of several rows of nearly flat outer ligules, barely curled downwards. The opulent heads measure up to 13cm (5in) in diameter. The ligules are extremely dark red, rich in brown to black shades. The tightly packed flower centre is made up of small black petals. The plant will reach 80cm (32in) in height and 50cm (20in) in width. It has a bushy and compact habit. The strength of its stems means it does not require any staking. Its dark green-blue leaves are divided into finely toothed lobes. Flowering begins in July and ends in October-November, if faded blooms are regularly removed or stems are cut to make bouquets.

Dahlias are stars of borders and ornamental gardens, confidently accompanying the most beautiful flowers. However, they are also appreciated alongside vegetable plants. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was first cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. Its poor taste qualities quickly saw it categorised as an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

'Karma Choc' works well in borders and in pots on patios. It pairs particularly well with white, pink, and orange flowers, as well as silver foliage.

Our advice: pick the blooms early in the morning when the flower is fully open.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Karma Choc' prefers a sunny spot. Plant after the last frost, from May to June. Place it in ordinary, fairly fertile, sandy soil that is rich in humus and well-drained. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4in), spaced 40cm (16in) apart. Provide nitrogen-rich fertiliser until the end of June, then potassium-rich fertiliser from July to October. These fertilisations should be done once a week and will help to extend the flowering period. After planting, water regularly at the base, preferably in the evening, avoiding wetting the foliage. Watering is imperative during hot periods. Regularly remove faded flowers. After flowering, store the tubers in a dry and well-ventilated place, preferably in sand and protected from rodents. A cellar is an ideal location. Before storing them, leave a few leaves in place so that the tuber can replenish its nutrient reserves. Wait for these leaves to turn yellow. You can replant the tubers in spring.
