Description

The Dahlia 'Gallery Vermeer' is a variety of dwarf dahlia with double flowers in bronze orange colour that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tubercular roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branching stems, bearing compound, odd-pinnate leaves with rounded leaflets. The stems bear double flowers with a diameter of 9 cm (4in), in bronze orange colour. The flowers consist of wide and flat petals, slightly curled.

The Dahlia 'Gallery Vermeer' grows in rich, clayey but healthy soil, deeply worked in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor and sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Vermeer' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, take into account the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Gallery Vermeer' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always stake the plants and loosely tie the young stems. Add slow-release compost or organic fertilizer during planting, and apply liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place, avoiding excessive humidity. Transplant them in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
