This dahlia surprises my friends a bit with its shape and colour! Also very floriferous.

Description

Honka red has charming and unique flowers, half-orchid, half-ruff. Its delicate petals, slightly curved and detached from each other, give it a star shape. It also has a red ruff of petaloids enhanced with a yellow stamen heart. They evoke old windmills.

The honka dahlias with their simple forms harmoniously blend with the grasses and asters that accompany them at the end of flowering.

Planting and care

Plant your dahlias in the springtime in deeply worked soil enriched, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, pour one liter of water. Water regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold. They need to be overwintered. In November, the first frost will blacken the foliage, which is the time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tuber can replenish its reserves. When the foliage is dry, cut the stems 10 cm (4in) from the tuber. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place.
