Description

The 'Bishop of Auckland' Dahlia is a variety of dahlia with red flowers crowned with yellow that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branched stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Strong, fleshy stems 90cm (35in) in height are topped with flowers with wide, flat, rather incurved ligules, 8cm (3in) in diameter, red in colour.

The 'Bishop of Auckland' Dahlia grows well in rich, clayey but healthy soil, worked deeply in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor and sandy soils.

The 'Bishop of Auckland' Dahlia is used in mixed borders with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, take into account the dimensions for the composition of your borders.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Bishop of Auckland' should be planted from mid-April to early May at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and spaced 60cm (24in) apart. Always use stakes and tie the young stems loosely. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting and liquid fertiliser once a month during growth. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to bud on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in darkness in a cool, well-ventilated place, not too damp. Transplant in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
