Description

Dahlia 'Fascination' is a summer bulb of a rare species.

This magnificent dahlia bears an abundance of flowers from July to the first frost. These lovely peony-like flowers measure 8 to 10cm (3 to 4in) in diameter. The flowers are a vibrant pink colour with a brown heart and yellow stamens. The flowers make beautiful bouquets, with a vase life of 2 to 6 days. It is also an ornamental plant.

The abundant and deciduous foliage is bronze. The leaves are opposite. It is a medium-sized dahlia that can reach a height of 75 to 85cm (30 to 34in).

It looks wonderful in flower beds and borders, as well as in pots and containers on balconies and patios. It can be combined with other bulbous plants, whether they are perennials or annuals. It can also be grown individually.

This dahlia thrives at the foot of lavateras.

Our advice: to make bouquets, pick the flowers early in the morning when they are fully open.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Fascination' prefers a sunny spot. Plant after the last frost, from May to June. Place it in ordinary, fairly fertile, sandy soil that is rich in humus and well-drained. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4in), spaced 40cm (16in) apart. Provide nitrogen-rich fertiliser until the end of June, then potassium-rich fertiliser from July to October. These fertilisations should be done once a week, and will help to extend the flowering period. After planting, water regularly at the base, preferably in the evening, avoiding wetting the foliage. Watering is imperative during hot periods. Regularly remove faded flowers. After flowering, store the tubers in a dry and well-ventilated place, preferably in sand and protected from rodents. A cellar is an ideal location. Before storing them, leave a few leaves in place so that the tuber can replenish its nutrient reserves. Wait for these leaves to turn yellow. You can replant the tubers in spring.
