Description

Dahlia 'American Dawn' is a variety of decorative dahlia with small salmon-coloured flowers introduced in 2001 that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen, fleshy tubular roots. These tubers, grouped in vascular bundles, produce upright, hollow, and branching stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems, 90cm (35in) tall, are topped with small flowers with wide, flat, rather incurved ligulate petals, measuring 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) in diameter, in a salmon colour.

Dahlia 'American Dawn' thrives in rich, clay but well-drained soil, deeply worked in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.

Dahlia 'American Dawn' is used in mixed flower beds or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'American Dawn' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always stake the plants and tie the young shoots loosely. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during growth. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place, not too damp. Transplant in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
