Description

Dahlia 'Vanilla' is a variety of decorative dahlia with white and yellow camellia-like flowers that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tubers. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branching stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems, 90cm (35in) tall, are topped with flowers with wide, flattened, rather incurved ligules, 11cm (4in) in diameter, white and yellow.

Dahlia 'Vanilla' grows in rich, clay but healthy soil, deeply worked in warm and sunny conditions, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor and sandy soils.

Dahlia 'Vanilla' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, take into account the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Vanilla' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always use stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during growth. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place that is not too humid. Replant in early May when there is no longer a risk of frost.
