Description

This is a collection of 9 oriental hybrid lilies with highly fragrant summer flowers, in a beautiful mix of white and pink. In addition to their sweet fragrance, these flowers are elegant, with single or sometimes semi-double blooms, truly fabulous in a vase and magnificent in flower beds or borders. Provide them with a humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, free from limestone. This collection consists of:

- 3 Mona Lisa lilies: a compact variety, 75 cm (30in) tall when in bloom, with magnificent pale pink cup-shaped flowers speckled with purple, often semi-double.

- 3 Casablanca lilies: Lilies with magnificent huge flower crowns, pure white, among the largest in the genus. Its sturdy flower stem rises to 1.20m (4ft) from the ground.

- 3 Stargazer lilies: a deservedly popular variety that bears magnificent upright cup-shaped flowers in a deep red, speckled with purple, with a lighter pink edge on the petals. It reaches a height of 75 cm (30in) from the ground.

Individually labelled.

The oriental lily is a bulbous plant in the family Liliaceae. From spring onwards, it forms a narrow and very vertical clump, with rapid growth. This plant expands over time, as the bulbs produce bulblets through vegetative multiplication. In July-August, strongly fragrant umbels of flowers appear, carried by very sturdy stems that do not require staking. The leaves are dark green and glossy, lanceolate in shape. The foliage of the lily disappears in winter and reappears in spring, quite late. You may want to mark its location to avoid accidental hits with a spade.

A plant that prefers humus-rich soil or leaf compost, the oriental lily does not tolerate calcareous, poorly drained, and heavy soils, which can cause bulb rot in winter. You can associate lilies with perennial plants or low-growing bushes, as they prefer to have their feet in the shade. The latter will help prevent the stems from bending under the effect of the wind. They are superb in flower pots, which can be placed on the patio, near entrances, or not far from high-traffic areas to enjoy their precious blooms that fill the summer evenings with fragrance. Create fabulous bouquets for the home with 'Casablanca', 'Mona Lisa', and 'Stargazer'.

Planting and care

Plant the lilies as soon as you receive them. They enjoy the winter cold which allows them to root. They do not appreciate calcareous, poorly drained, and heavy soils. You should plant them with their heads in full sun, their feet in the shade, from September to May, burying the bulbs 15 cm (6in) deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. It is preferable to plant lilies in a position that does not exceed 4-5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Surround them with a pocket of sand that will prevent rot and attacks from slugs, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as vegetation only starts in April. When the stems reach 30 cm (12in) in height, discreetly stake them if necessary. If red lily beetles appear, treat them immediately, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually, be careful as they drop as soon as they are touched, so put a box underneath. After flowering, it is useful to cut the faded flowers halfway up so that the bed remains beautiful during the summer.

Our Advice: Lilies are very suitable for pot cultivation. Install 1 to 5 bulbs in a deep pot. Water a little and place your pots frost-free. Take them out in spring and enjoy their fragrance on your patio!
