Description

This hybrid rocket Eruca (x) Diplotaxis, rare in cultivation, is the result of cross-breeding between the Cultivated Rocket (Eruca vesicaria subsp. sativa) and the Wild Rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia). It is a small annual vegetable plant with a particularly aromatic and easy cultivation. It is halfway between a salad and a condiment, as its finely cut leaves have a pronounced spicy and peppery flavor. It grows quite quickly and can be harvested all year round if protected from the cold. It should be planted in spring.

Its young tender leaves, with a powerful and spicy flavor, are used like watercress, mixed in salads. Add a few leaves to your sauces, soups, or other vegetable dishes, either raw or steamed. It is a plant rich in vitamin C and iron. Its spring to summer flowering, which attracts bees, consists of small cream-colored flowers. Rocket is sensitive to frost.

Rocket is not demanding and ideally grows in humus-rich, well-draining soil that is not too dry, but it also tolerates ordinary soils well.

Harvest: It is recommended to spread out the sowings and plantings to have a continuous supply. Simply cut it at ground level.

Storage: Rocket leaves can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days. To fully enjoy its aroma, we recommend consuming it freshly picked.

Gardener's tip: Flea beetles, tiny beetles, are fond of rocket leaves and meticulously puncture them during dry and hot weather. While spraying tansy infusion can limit the damage, using insect netting from sowing is the most effective method of control, while avoiding the use of insecticides, which, even of natural origin, have consequences on the garden's balance.

Planting and care

The Hybrid Rocket likes the sun (in early summer) or partial shade (in full summer), ideally in humus-rich, slightly moist and well-draining soil. If compost is needed, it should preferably be applied in autumn, in the form of well-rotted compost, by raking it into the soil to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after having loosened the soil as is done for any vegetable cultivation.

Planting is done in spring or autumn. Rocket plants should be spaced 30 cm (12in) apart in all directions. Dig a hole, place the root ball and cover with fine soil. Firmly press down and water to keep the soil moist.

It is a plant that easily goes to seed (except for some particularly resistant varieties to this phenomenon), so remember to water regularly and mulch the soil to maintain good moisture.
