Description

'Chard Witerbi' is a variety mainly grown for its young tender leaves, deep green, consumed like spinach in the juvenile stage. It is a Chard harvested over a long period as it grows. It is sown from April to May and harvested from May to August.

Chard gets its name from a popular soup, "porée", consumed in the Middle Ages and of which it was the main ingredient. It is also known by many other names: Swiss Chard, leaf beet, and silver beet.

Chard leaves are delicious in pies and soups or cooked like spinach. The stalks can be prepared gratin-style with bechamel sauce or steamed. Although low in calories and rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals, Chard should be consumed in moderation for people suffering from arthritis and rheumatism, as it contains oxalates.

Harvest: leaves and stalks are harvested as needed by selecting the largest ones.

Storage: it can be stored for a few days in a cool place after harvesting.

Gardener's tip: Regular hoeing and weeding are recommended, and mulching is advised in drought.

Planting and care

Sowing

Sowing is done from April to May.

In a previously amended soil (rich but without fresh manure) and finely prepared with a rake.

Directly in place, as transplanting sometimes causes premature seed setting.

Either in small holes with three seeds every 40 cm (16in) covered with a small centimetre of fine soil. Then, regular watering until germination. Keep the most beautiful plant at the stage of 3-4 leaves.

Or in a shallow furrow, in rows 40 cm (16in) apart, covered with a small centimetre of fine soil. Then, regular watering until germination. At the stage of 3-4 leaves, thin out to leave only one plant every 40 cm (16in).

Maintenance

Regularly hoe and weed the soil.

Watering should be plentiful and frequent. A vegetative cover of the soil (mulching) is beneficial.

Chard can withstand winter in the ground under certain climates (above -6 °C (21.2°F)) by generously mulching them. They can also be stored.
