Description

The Valentina Watermelon, La Dolcissima, is a variety that produces large fruits (7 to 10 kg) and is resistant to heat. This vegetable plant with creeping stems, about 3 meters (10 feet) long, is grown for its fleshy, smooth fruits, with cylindrical shape and sweet, watery, and melting flesh. Sowing in April for a harvest 5 months later.

The Watermelon is an annual vegetable plant with creeping stems. It is grown for its cylindrical fruits with sweet and melting flesh, which are consumed raw like melons. It is a very refreshing fruit highly appreciated in hot regions. It can also be used to make very good jams and sorbets. Watermelons have antiscorbutic, purifying, and refreshing properties and contain vitamins (A, B, C) and minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron).

The watermelon requires well-fertilized soil, a warm and sunny exposure, as well as regular watering.

Harvest: watermelons are harvested when ripe: they lose their shiny colour and sound hollow when tapped.

Storage: they can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator.

Gardener's tip: Regular hoeing and weeding are recommended, and mulching is advised.

Planting and care

Sowing in April.

The seeds are sown in early April in buckets filled with compost and placed in a bright room or a greenhouse at over 20°C (68°F) for good germination.

Place 2 or 3 seeds per bucket. When the plants have a few leaves, keep only one plant per bucket. Plant the watermelon plants with their root ball in mid-May when there is no longer a risk of frost, in holes enriched with compost and spaced 1m (3ft) apart in all directions.

Maintenance

Watering should be abundant and frequent, but with water at room temperature to avoid inhibiting plant growth. A blanket bog is beneficial.

Weeding and hoeing are recommended.
