More information

Annual flowers in this mix will produce seeds that are sought after by birds, from late summer to winter. With their presence, the birds bring life to the garden while naturally contributing to protecting crops from pests. The seeds are sown from March to early June, scattered in the sun, in well-prepared and loosened soil. The plants will bloom from June-July to September. One box can cover up to 200 m².

Description

This Flowering Fallow for birds is a mix of 18 species of annual flowers that produce sought-after seeds by birds. It provides them with a varied food source early in the season and during the winter, at a time when the insects they feed on in the summer are still scarce. Very early and appreciated, flax seeds will quickly be available. Then comes the season of sorghum, millet, and other sunflowers sought after by tits, sparrows, warblers, accentors, finches, and goldfinches. The seeds are sown in the spring, in the sun, in freshly cleared, worked, and loosened soil, scattering them as you go. The meadow thus created will also provide colour to the garden and a refuge for biodiversity.

All the annual plants that make up this mix flower 6 to 8 weeks after sowing. They are not demanding and can tolerate a wide range of soils as long as they are not too clayey, too acidic, or too arid. Their flowering extends from June to September, and the availability of seeds extends from September to January. One box allows to cover up to 200 square metres of land. The size of the plants reaches about 80cm (32in) in height. Some, whose seeds have escaped the appetite of birds, will self-sow wherever they please. At the end of flowering, do not prune, and you will be able to observe our magnificent garden companions! Indeed, in the autumn period, the seeds become a first-choice food source for birds.

Partial composition:
Helianthus annuus, Cosmos bipinnatus, Panicum miliaceum, Sorghum nigrum, Linum

The Bird Flowering Fallow is very trendy, combining usefulness with pleasure, flowering throughout the entire summer season and requiring very little maintenance. Occasional watering if the weather is really dry will be more than enough. Invite nature into your garden: sow our flower mixes near the vegetable garden, in a part of the garden left a bit untended, or on the large slope that borders a sunken path, near your fruit trees, or even at the back of the garden on the border with the countryside...

Planting and care

Sowing: from March to early June

Turn over the soil. Depending on the surface, you can use a cultivator or agricultural equipment. • Refine, rake, level, remove stones and weeds. • Mix the contents of the packet with an equivalent volume of dry sand to achieve better seed distribution. • Sow by broadcasting on the surface like sowing a lawn. • Roll or compact the soil to bring the seeds into contact with the ground. • Water and keep moist until germination.

The right amount to sow: sow about 2.5g per m²
Examples:

• 100m²: weigh 250 grams
• 200m²: the entire box

Once the plants are well established, you will only water your bed in case of prolonged drought. At the end of flowering, do not prune, and you will be able to observe our magnificent garden companions! Indeed, in the autumn period, the seeds become a prime source of food for the birds.
