I am sorry to hear that your eucalyptus arrived dead. There is no green when you scratch its little branches. The plant never recovered. I demand a refund. Thank you. Regards

Graden Merit Value-for-money
Fast-growing and vigorous tree, with a broad columnar habit, decorative bark, and evergreen grey-blue foliage that is aromatic when crushed. The juvenile leaves are small and rounded, while the adult leaves are longer. This species thrives in full sun in acidic soils, preferably not too dry. It is one of the hardiest eucalyptus species: once well established, its trunk can withstand temperatures as low as -18 °C (-0.4°F). Its height can be limited and its habit kept dense by cutting back all its stems in late winter.

Description

The Eucalyptus gunnii, also known as Apple cider gum or Round-leaved eucalyptus, is a botanical species native to Tasmania that is often planted in our climates because the tree is vigorous and hardy enough to withstand winter in most regions. It develops a wide and flexible columnar habit if not pruned or cut back by frost, its bark is decorative and its evergreen blue-grey foliage is appreciated for its brightness and aromatic scent. More suitable for large gardens, it can still be maintained as a bush through pruning. The apple cider gum is decorative as a solitary specimen, but it is also a good hedge plant.

The Eucalyptus gunnii belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is a fast-growing species, with branches growing from 1 to 1.50m per year during the first five years. This species prefers sun and neutral to acidic, cool soils. However, well-rooted specimens withstand summer drought well. The main attraction of this tall tree, which can reach 20m (65.6ft) in height and 10m (32.8ft) in width, is its blue-grey foliage, almost round in the juvenile stage and then more elongated and lance-shaped. The leaves of the Eucalyptus gunnii are alternately arranged on the branches, measuring 5 to 8cm (3.1in) in length and containing aromatic essential oils. Its beautiful deciduous bark, smooth and greenish-white, peels as it ages to reveal a new yellowish-green, sometimes grey bark tinged with pink. Flowers are rare in our climates. They form around september, if the summer is sufficiently warm and long, on specimens at least 5-6 years old. They are umbels of 3 cream-white honey-scented flowers.

Eucalyptus gunnii will benefit from being planted in a position sheltered from strong, dry, and cold winds. It works wonders in predominantly white or silver scenes and brings an exotic touch to the garden planted as a tall screen, in groups or as a solitary specimen. It is strongly advised not to plant it too close to a building or a drain, as its root system is extensive. Regular pruning easily maintains it as a bushy shrub, allowing you to enjoy its beautiful juvenile foliage. To accompany it, you can opt for gorsemyrtle, or Leptospermum, for example. These plants will not suffer too much from the proximity to the Eucalyptus, whose roots dry out the soil.

Virtues: The leaves, rich in essential oil, are used in various forms (infusion, tincture, oil, etc.) to treat numerous respiratory ailments, rheumatism, migraines, fatigue, and as an antiseptic.

Planting and care

The Eucalyptus gunnii is best planted in early spring, in well-drained soil, preferably neutral to acidic (non-chalky) in a warm and sunny position, sheltered from strong, dry and cold winds. Then let nature take its course, the growth is very rapid. No need for pruning. Watering and fertilization are optional once the plant is well-rooted. In March, you can prune it back to ground level to form a beautiful, bushy habit of 3m (9.8ft) high. Although it can withstand temperatures as low as -18°C (-0.4°F), after a severe frost, its stems can be killed. In this case, cut it back to ground level and the plant will regenerate new stems bearing young foliage from its stump.
