Description

The Melliferous Spring Floral Fallow Mix is a selection of perennial and annual flowers chosen for their melliferous and nectar-rich blooms. Easy to grow in ordinary soil and requiring very little maintenance, they can be sown directly in place in autumn, in well-prepared and loosened soil, in full sun. The fallow meadow that is created will flower for at least two years, providing an important source of sugars and proteins for honeybees.

This selection consists of 14 species of annual and perennial plants that are fast-growing, hardy, and easy to cultivate. The annuals will bloom 6 to 8 weeks after sowing, while the perennials will produce their first flowers from the following spring. Some species, especially among the annuals, easily naturalise through spontaneous sowing in ordinary and well-draining soil. The height of the plants does not exceed 50 cm (1 ft 7 in).

Partial Composition: Centaurea jacea wild form, Chrysanthemum leucanthemum wild form, Coriandrum sativum, etc.

Floral fallows are very popular. This mix blooms throughout the entire summer season, limits mowing areas, promotes biodiversity, and grows almost without care: watering if the weather is extremely dry and mowing to 10-20 cm (3.9-7.9 in) above the ground in autumn will be more than enough. Ideal for adding colour and life to a sunny area, this Melliferous Spring Floral Fallow Mix will be particularly useful for the enthusiast who owns a few beehives. It will also attract bees near fruit trees or the vegetable garden, encouraging pollination and fruit production.

Planting and care

Sowing: September to October > flowering: April to July

1- Dig the soil as deeply as possible: at least 10 cm (3.9 in).
2- Rake and level the surface for regular sowing.
3- Mix the seeds with sand to facilitate sowing.
4- Broadcast the seeds on the surface (like sowing a lawn).
5- Roll or tamp the soil to bring the seeds into contact with the soil.
6- Water with a fine rain until the seeds germinate.

Tip: Keeping the soil moist for several days ensures rapid germination of all flower seeds and thus limits the appearance of weeds.

To maintain the floral fallow the following year, at the end of flowering (late September or early October), mow and then trim, without a tray, 10 cm (3.9 in) above the ground.

Plants can also be uprooted and the soil cleaned to sow a summer flower fallow in its place in the spring.
