More information

A flowering meadow of perennial or annual nectar-rich and honey-rich flowers to attract bees and other pollinating insects. They will naturally pollinate fruit trees and vegetables in the vegetable garden, promoting good fruit production. The seeds are sown in spring by broadcasting, in the sun, onto well-prepared soil. The plants will flower from May-June to September. One box covers 50 to 100 m² of ground.

Description

This Pollination Meadow brings together 25 species of perennial and annual wild plants, specially selected for their ability to attract and feed pollinating insects, which increases fruit production in orchards or vegetable gardens. Easy to grow in ordinary soil and requiring very little maintenance, they are sown in spring, scattered in the sun, in well-prepared and loosened soil. Their flowering occurs throughout the summer. The bed thus created will bloom for several years while providing good refuge for biodiversity.

Attracted by the nectar of the flowers, insects will pollinate these meadow flowers and naturally pollinate your fruit trees and vegetables as a result. Better pollination will increase the potential harvest of fruits and vegetables (in both quantity and quality). All these plants show rather rapid growth. Annuals bloom 6 to 8 weeks after sowing and easily naturalise in the garden through self-seeding in ordinary and well-drained soil. A box of seeds can cover 50 to 100 square metres. The size of the plants ranges from 30cm (12in) to 80cm (32in) in height.

Sample composition: Papaver rhoeas, Borago officinalis, Scabiosa atropurpurea, Salvia pratensis

It has become very popular to plant a flower meadow. They combine usefulness with pleasure, flowering throughout the summer and requiring very little maintenance. Watering if the weather is really dry and cutting to 10-20 cm (4-8in) above the ground in autumn is all that's needed. Invite nature into your garden: sow our flower mixtures near the vegetable garden, on an embankment bordering a sunken path, near your fruit trees, or at the back of a garden bordering the countryside...

Planting and care

Sowing: from March to early June

Turn over the soil. Depending on the area, you can use a rotavator or agricultural equipment.  • Refine, rake, level, remove stones and weeds.  • Mix the contents of the packet with an equivalent volume of dry sand to achieve a better distribution of the seeds.  • Scatter the seeds on the surface, similar to sowing grass.  • Roll or compact the soil to bring the seeds into contact with the earth.  • Water and keep moist until germination.

Sow approximately 5 grams per square metre
Examples:

• 50 square metres: weigh out 250 grams
• 100 square metres: use the entire box

To maintain your flower meadow for the following year, scythe at the end of flowering (late September or early October), and then mow without the grass box, to a height of 10cm (4in) above the ground.
